■ HERAKLION, CRETE: I thought nothing would ever top the madness of seeing Red Star in Belgrade back in 2016. And for sheer inside-the-stadium madness, sure, nothing probably ever will. But what about if all the spectators found themselves on a rooftop next to the stadium because public gatherings on business grounds were for the time being impossible, but gathering on private grounds in similar numbers were still allowed?
You’d think such a scenario would never come into existence. But this is 2020 and if there’s anything this year has taught me, it is that the world operates in unpredictable ways.
So what exactly does a rooftop football match look like? Pretty much the same as a normal match only that there’s quite a lot more risk involved seeing as you can fall down onto the pavement below quite easily. It also didn’t help matters that he league champions Olympiacos were in town and the game thus drew a somewhat larger rooftop crowd than it did over the previous weeks.
In other words this was my type of event and this will go down as one of the most memorable football games I never watched.
